SS MAXIM GORKIY

The cover depicts the SS MAXIM GORKIY (ex HAMBURG) on her final visit to Flam, Norway. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

2009's desk calendar from P.K. Productions features twelve images of passenger ships of all shapes and sizes captured by Peter Knego during a busy year of travel in 2008. The vessels range from the classic steamers MAXIM GORKIY, OCEANIC (ex INDEPENDENCE) and IVORY to sleek vintage diesel beauties (SAGA ROSE, QE2, DISCOVERY and SAPPHIRE), Fred. Olsen's recently-stretched BALMORAL (ex CROWN ODYSSEY), the doomed, beached SERENA (ex MERMOZ), modern Italian behemoths (COSTA SERENA and MSC ORCHESTRA) and the elegant INSIGNIA. The settings span from Alang to Portofino, Piraeus, Tinos, San Francisco and Barbados.

The calendar measures 8.25 by 4 inches and is printed on high quality glossy card stock.

SERENA Sunrise

SERENA Sunrise: January shows Carnival-owned Costa Cruises' common platform CONQUEST class MV COSTA SERENA anchored at Katakolon (Olympia), Greece, partially engulfed in a swirl of atmospheric fog as the sun rises off her port side. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

OCEANIC Outbound

OCEANIC Outbound: February's image is the OCEANIC (ex INDEPENDENCE, OCEANIC INDEPENDENCE) departing under tow as she passes through the Golden Gate on her way to Asia and a very uncertain futue. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

BALMORAL Barthelmy

BALMORAL Barthelemy: Taken from a bouncing jet boat, the lovely BALMORAL (ex CROWN ODYSSEY, NORWEGIAN CROWN), recently stretched for new owners, Fred. Olsen Line, is shown at anchor in exquisite St. Barts. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

Sterward QUEEN

Sternward QUEEN: In April of 2008, the venerable QE2 made her last visit to Los Angeles, California while on the final segment of her annual world cruise. She exited the harbor backwards in a most unusual but still majestic departure. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

ROSE

ROSE Without A Thorn: May features the exquisite SAGA ROSE (ex SAGAFJORD) arriving at Piraeus shortly after dawn from the decks of the NORWEGIAN PEARL on a fine May morning. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

DISCOVERY

DISCOVERY Island: June's image of the MV DISCOVERY (ex ISLAND PRINCESS) was taken at Barbados shortly before the former Love Boat's twin sister departed on a transatlantic repositioning voyage to the U.K. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

MV INSIGNIA

Portofino Perfection -- MV INSIGNIA: Few ships can match Oceania's INSIGNIA (ex R ONE, REGATTA) for her elegance, top notch cuisine and old world service. One of the rare recently-built ships with good proportions and a "human scale", she is shown at anchor off Portofino, Italy on a summer afternoon. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

SERERNA Monsoon

SERENA Monsoon: August is monsoon season in India and the ominous skies behind this twilight view of the lovely, sad SERENA (ex MERMOZ) make her final days at the scrap yard seem even more poetically dramatic. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

IVORY

IVORY Power: Louis Cruise Line's SS IVORY (ex AUSONIA, AEGEAN tWO) was only scheduled to operate just six more short weeks when this photo was taken of her at Limassol in September of 2008. Few ships will ever match her greyhound lines and vintage Italian-built character. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

SAPPHIRE

SAPPHIRE Seagulls: SAPPHIRE began life in 1967 as Princess Cruises' ITALIA. She later sailed as Costa's ITALIA and Ocean Cruise Line's OCEAN PRINCESS and is now operating out of Limassol for the Cyprus market. She is shown at the lovely Greek Island of Tinos. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2007.

MAXIM

MAXIM's Mirror: MAXIM GORKIY (ex HAMBURG) was called the Space Ship when she first debuted, a name suiting for both her great passenger space ratio and the fantastic sci-funnel she sported. Hopefully, she will reappear in next year's calendar as the newly-reformed Orient Lines' MARCO POLO II. Stay tuned. In the meantime, here is a striking view of her in mirror-like waters at Flam, Norway. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.

ORCHESTRAL

ORCHESTRAL Manoeuvres In The Dark: MSC ORCHESTRA passed very close to the anchored INSIGNIA at Sorrento one fine evening, saluting the Oceania ship before twinkling off into the distance. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2008.
