While aboard CARNIVAL MAGIC, I could not resist this view of no less than four of the line's signature winged funnels in the sunny setting of Cozumel. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.
2012's desk calendar from P.K. Productions features twelve images of passenger ships, captured by cruise journalist Peter Knego during a busy year of travel in 2011. The vessels range from the former Italian Line AUGUSTUS to the sparkling, deluxe SILVER SPIRIT and the colossal ALLURE OF THE SEAS. The latest, largest additions to the Holland America and Princess fleets; a pair of pensive shots from the now classic CELEBRITY CENTURY in Alaska; Azamara Club Cruises' dashing AZAMARA JOURNEY surging through the Pacific off Cabo San Lucas; Disney's sleek DISNEY WONDER at anchor off Cabo; two heartbreaking but serene views of the PHILIPPINE (former AUGUSTUS) at the Indian breakers; the graceful WIND SURF waiting in the calm Croatian waters of Korcula and the classic FUNCHAL being refitted in Lisbon. It all ends on a melancholy but reflective note with the fully exposed-PHILIPPINE on the beach awaiting her demise, 60 years after her launch. The settings span from Alang to Alaska and Mexico to the Caribbean and Croatia.
The calendar measures 8.25 by 4 inches and is printed on high quality glossy card stock.
Celebrity Reflection: The 1996-built CELEBRITY CENTURY's funnel is mirrored in the calm waters of Juneau, Alaska. Of course, CELEBRITY REFLECTION is the name of the line's currently-under-construction newbuild and probably the ship that will ultimately displace the classic and still very handsome CELEBRITY CENTURY from the Celebrity Cruises fleet. Gonna Take An Azamara JOURNEY... : Long a fan of the original "R" ships of now defunct Renaissance Cruises, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to take Azamara Club Cruises' AZAMARA JOURNEY (ex R SIX) to the Sea Of Cortez. Everything about the cruise was a delight, from the food and service to the gracious staff (under the command of Captain Johannes Tysse). This image was taken on a blustery but sunny February afternoon as the JOURNEY passed Cabo San Lucas. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.

Ill-NIEUW-minating St. Maarten: After hours in the St. Maarten cruise terminal internet cafe, I emerged to find the ship that brought me there, Holland America's NIEUW AMSTERDAM, bewitchingly illuminated in a twilight backdrop. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.

RUBY PRINCESS In A Sapphire Setting: While aboard Holland America's latest, largest ship, the NIEUW AMSTERDAM, in St. Maarten, I watched as Princess Cruises' latest, largest ship, the RUBY PRINCESS arrived in a soothing blue setting of sea and sky. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.

Los Arcos And DISNEY WONDER: Although the era of the ocean liner is all but over, Disney Cruise Lines has done an admirable job of building ships that resemble the great liners of the past. This view of their 1999-built DISNEY WONDER was taken while the ship was anchored off rugged Los Arcos in Cabo San Lucas. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.

ALLURE At Sea: At 225,000 gross tons, the 5,400 passenger ALLURE OF THE SEAS will probably hold on to the title of world's largest cruise ship for a long, long time. Watching this mini-city sail past was nothing short of a spectacle -- the ship is so large, she creates a miniature tsunami that reverberates through Fort Lauderdale's "cut" as she passes. Contemplating CENTURY: The pleasingly angular CELEBRITY CENTURY is seen anchored off Icy Strait Point, Alaska just before the onset of a torrential rain. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.

Addio AUGUSTUS!: Never again will ships be as sleek and beautiful as Italian Line's AUGUSTUS of 1952. Having survived 60 years, she finally met her end at the shipbreaking yard of Alang, India in late 2011. Last known as the hotel ship MS PHILIPPINES, this distant view is of her high and dry at low tide. Within weeks, she would gradually be winched ashore by the anchor chains in the foreground and be cut up for India's steel mills. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.

Of Korcula To WIND SURF!: Windstar Cruises' combination diesel and sailing ship WIND SURF is one of the prettiest cruise ships afloat. Here she is in the anchorage off the Croatian hamlet of Korcula, where, thanks to her floating marina, guests could swim and kayak in the crystalline waters. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.

Fitting Out FUNCHAL: The 1961-built, Portuguese-owned FUNCHAL is one of the very last classic cruise ships afloat. Instead of sending her off to the shipbreakers, her owners, Classic Internatinal Cruises, have invested heavily in refitting the ship to meet the strict new SOLAS regulations of 2010. This is a view of her in the afternoon sun at a remote pier in Lisbon when the extensive refit was underway. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.

Sainted SPIRIT Of SILVER: In late October of 2011, I embarked on a sixteen night Atlantic crossing aboard Silversea Cruises ultra-deluxe SILVER SPIRIT. The lighting and photographic conditions were perfect while the ship was at anchor off Ile Des Sants, Guadeloupe. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.

Poignant Passage: Another view of the former AUGUSTUS at twilight as the tides of Alang had retreated. I had spent the day on board the beached ship to document her one final time and to try and salvage as much of her vintage fittings as possible. It was a rare chance to photograph this soon-to-vanish, graceful creation -- fully exposed and in a natural element. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2011.
