Cabinet From SS FESTIVALE Captain's Office Custom Made The front of the cabinet. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2006.
Very Solid And Heavy Construction Tan Veneered Cabinet/Stand 35.5 Inches Tall 32 Inches Wide (top) 20 Inches Deep (top) $250
All the way until the ship was beached at Alang, the captain's office was a magnificent space and largely unchanged from the Union-Castle TRANSVAAL CASTLE days. There was rich wood paneling and many John Brown fixtures as well as high backed chairs and a Regency style sofa. Mixed in amongst the British-built finery were some cabinets with very sturdy 1970s Carnival style faux veneers built by the joiner onboard, Mr. Carmine Laudonia. I am told by Mr. Ron Ness, the hotel director on Carnival's MV INSPIRATION, that a television was purchased in St. Maarten and the piece was custom built for it. This one served as a cabinet and television stand. It is extremely heavy and solid, and while the veneer is not real wood, retains a rustic look. The knobs are brass and it is in excellent condition. There are two of these and once they are gone, that is it for this phase of the ship's career and cabinets.
Kind thanks to Mr. Ness, a loyal Carnival employee for over 20 years, for the real story behind these two cabinets.
