Two views of the
of the long tables and details of the gorgeous cloisonne tops. Photos and copyright Peter Knego 2010. Georg Manner was one of post war Germany's prominent architects. His maritime contributions included the Hamburg-Sud CAP cargo liners, of which the CAP SAN DIEGO survives as a hotel and museum in Hamburg. Arguably his most celebrated floating achievement was German Atlantic Lines' TS HAMBURG, the first German-built German flaship after the war. The HAMBURG was forward-looking and quite experimental with her saucer-topped hourglass funnel, central passageways and clean, high quality modern interior fittings. Too bad her builders/owners chose to give her steam propulsion; otherwise, she might still be in service today.

The HAMBURG's Foyer (see tables behind Helga), a view of one on the ship after arriving at Alang, the shorter blue tables and another cloisonne detail. Photos and copyright Peter Knego
2010, Peter Knego collection and Kaushal Trivedi 2009. These tables are incredibly heavy and solid and were just part of the remarkable marble paneled foyer on the HAMBURG, which remained unchanged throughout the ship's life as the MAXIM GORKIY. The trident light fixtures (also available on MidShipCentury), Aubusson tapestries (also available on MidShipCentury) and angular, white leather chrome-framed seating made this a perfect MidCentury oeuvre. Overall condition is excellent but there are some expected minor cracks and dings in the cloisonne that can be addressed with a little patience and tlc, if desired.
