There were so many beautiful original works of art left on the Georg Manner designed MAXIM GORKIY (ex HAMBURG of 1969) when she sailed off to the breakers in early 2009. Among them were two cloisonne and brass panels in the ship's library. This horizontal panel featured intense blue quadrilateral shapes, five of which are flush and seven of which project a couple inches outward from the heavy copper colored board they are mounted on. Tke aft bulkhead featured a smaller, vertical panel with circular red modifs which will also be offered here.

This installation was on the inboard bulkhead of the Library and while the artist is thus far not known, the work is of the very finest quality. It fit beautifully with the canted moulding, textured modernist ceilings and heavy chrome and marble furnishing. In latter years, the Library became somewhat of a shrine to the Malta Summit when MIkhail Gorbachev and George HW Bush came aboard the MAXIM GORKIY to negotiate cooperative relations between the U.S. and the former U.S.S.R.

Photos do not do justice to the striking details of the enameling. Each component of the panel is a work of art unto itself. The overall condition is excellent and this panel is reinforced in the back with a metal framework that contributes to its considerable weight.
