The panel shown on the ship just after her arrival at Alang in early 2009. Copyright Peter Knego 2009.

There were so many beautiful original works of art left on the Georg Manner designed MAXIM GORKIY (ex HAMBURG of 1969) when she sailed off to the breakers in early 2009. Among them were two cloisonne and brass panels in the ship's library. This vertical panel featured intense red circular shapes, ten of which are flush and five of which project an inch or so outward from the heavy golden/black colored board they are mounted on. The inboard bulkhead featured a larger, horizontal panel with quadrilateral blue (abstract signal flag) modifs which is also offered here.

This installation was on the aft bulkhead of the Library and while the artist is thus far not known, the work is of the very finest quality. It fit beautifully with the canted moulding, textured modernist ceilings and heavy chrome and marble furnishing. In latter years, the Library became somewhat of a shrine to the Malta Summit when MIkhail Gorbachev and George HW Bush came aboard the MAXIM GORKIY to negotiate cooperative relations between the U.S. and the former U.S.S.R.

A close up of the repair. Photos and copyright Peter Knego 2010.

The large red disc at center right was at some point damaged and repaired, otherwise, this work is in excellent condition. Each component of the panel is a work of art unto itself. The panel is reinforced in the back with a metal framework that, when combined with the red discs gives it a depth of approximately 4.5 inches.
