Top, and above, two views of the chair as it is today. Bottom, an illustration of a very spacious First Class cabin in IVERNIA's inaugural brochure from the mid-1950s. Photos by and copyright Peter Knego 2006 and Peter Knego collection.

What can I say about these chairs? They are so wonderfully unusual with their high backs and extremely low seats. Their arms are practically vertical, but their legs splay out in an exagggerated bow legged, knock-kneed manner. They look drunk, perhaps, but oh, so comfortable.

More of the same chair from various angles. Photos and copyright Peter Knego 2006.

Sadly, or perhaps, fittingly, the Ukrainians mix and matched the upholstery. The faded floral print of the chair is definitely not a match with the autumnal tiger-swirl of a cushion. No matter, because the upholstery is basically shot after years of laying about in Iliychevsk and then the ordeals of India. This would look smashing in its original magenta colored covering. The wood frame is solid and enduring, but could use some stain and varnish. This is the one and only chair of this ilk I have to sell. Two others stay as part of my collection. They are wonderful conversation pieces and a bit of very funky 1950s Cunardia.
