Vintage brochure image of a first class cabin on board SS AUSONIA. Note light shining on ceiling.  Peter Knego collection.

AUSONIA was not the biggest or most famous post war Italian liner but she was one of the most beautiful and also quite speedy. Built to transport three classes of passengers on Adriatica Line's Venice to Alexandria run, her first class cabins were quite sumptuous with rich wood paneling, Nino Zoncada's stylish Cassina and Thonet chairs and these exquisite, simple fixtures. Many of these lights were replaced when the ship was rebuilt in the 1980s, so I was lucky to get ten of these from the lovely liner before she was demolished in 2010.

The conical shades swivel in a full circle from the pivot at the end of their handsome nickel arm. The shades, themselves, are a deep slate color and "spreckled" in that typical 50s style and are in excellent condition although there are some tiny scratches and even a few small but errant paint drops from their years of service. They can be used as reading lights, ceiling spots or wall sconces but will need rewiring for US electrical power. Posted: January 3, 2011.
