I don't know the maker of these but was advised by my Italian friends that these lamps were of particular value and merit. I got a total of five and four sold before I could even post them to the site. These were in the main lounge and gallery leading to the dining room as well as some suites on STELLA SOLARIS.

They have a wonderful crazing to the glaze and various textures that indicate they may have been hand made. Even the inside is thickly glazed for additional protection. These date, of course, from the ship's 1971 incarnation.

STELLA SOLARIS was designed by Gio Ponti's collaborator, Nino Zoncada (I shouldn't have to put the Ponti part in here, but for non-ship buffs, it is important to state) who in his own right is possibly the most prolific of all the great Italian designers to contribute to passenger ships. His "roster" includes the entire Costa fleet up to EUGENIO C, many Italia ships, all the Sun Line ships, and more. STELLA SOLARIS was his last realized shipboard project although he did create designs for the Sun Lines STELLA POLARIS project that was never conceived.

The ceramic globe comes with a brass light fixture pole, the shade rings and a circular plexiglas base that was affixed to the table with the lamp. Posted: July 20, 2008.
