Photos of these chairs on the KONG FREDERIK IX (see corners of images) are copyright Bruce Peter collection.

These stunning chairs were from the private "royal salon" on board the famous train ferry, the 1954-built, 4,084 gt KONG FREDERIK IX, which was reserved for the actual Danish king and queen and other government or royal VIPs for the ship's crossings to Sweden.

Sadly, the KONG FREDERIK was to have been preserved as one of the last ships of her kind at Copenhagen but funding ran dry and the ship was surreptitiously sold for scrap, sneaking off under the name FREDERIK, and later RIKY, for Alang. Her beaching and ultimate scrapping was a controversial affair with the Danish government wanting her recalled, but it all came too late for the old girl. She was finished off in September of 2005 and very little was salvaged from her save for six chairs and a settee.

The chairs are in excellent structural condition, although the once lovely wool upholstery may not be salvageable. On one chair, the back legs have come loose but can be reglued with a dowel and minimum effort. These are absolutely unlike any other chairs out there and are iconic in their own way.
