Very little survived of the original SS STATENDAM after her many conversions. Over the years, her wonderful murals and heavy wooden Dutch furniture were replaced with more contemporary works of art and modern, ordinary furniture. The last havens of the ship's 1950s glory days were the Cinema, the Indoor Pool, portions of the stairtowers and lobbies, and most of the former first class suites.

A cabin on the ROTTERDAM/REMBRANDT with the same type of ottoman in view and another look a this specific item. Photos and copyright Peter Knego 2000, 2006.

These "pagoda" shaped ottomans are from the ship's suites and former first class cabins. They are basically identical to those found on the 1959-built SS ROTTERDAM, which is currently being prepared for a hopefully long and happy stationary life in Holland. Only a handful of these survive from SS STATENDAM. If I have another, I will seek it out and add it, otherwise, this is it.

The legs are splayed outward in "pagoda" style. At one time, there were nice little metal finales on the feet. These are long since gone. The light purple vinyl upholstery is courtesy of Regency Cruises, who last operated the ship as REGENT STAR. The original upholstery was a textured wool or burlap.

Fans of Holland America should especially love this piece as it evokes those halcyon days of a once Dutch-owned post war "spotless fleet". The ottoman's condition is very good but not perfect.
