Very little survived of the original SS STATENDAM after her many conversions. Over the years, her wonderful murals and heavy wooden Dutch furniture were replaced with more contemporary works of art and modern, ordinary furniture. The last havens of the ship's 1950s glory days were the Cinema, the Indoor Pool, portions of the stairtowers and lobbies, and most of the former first class suites.

These round tables are from the ship's suites, although there was a time in the STATENDAM's post "Cinderella refit" era after 1972 that some were used in the forward observation lounge that was later converted into the owner's suite on the REGENT STAR. They are also very similar and some are identical to the cabin tables that still exist on the 1959-built SS ROTTERDAM, which is currently being prepared for a hopefully long and happy stationary life in Holland. As there is some variance in size and style, I will be posting the few tables I was able to obtain on separate pages, although the information on their history will probably be identical.

This particular table top has a beveled wooden trim with an inset rim of brass or brass colored anodized aluminum. The top is that wonderful cross-hatch beige melamine of the 1950s and the post is of gorgeous beveled wood. The base is stainless steel with a black rubberized surfacing. The table base is weighed down to prevent tipping, making the table unit extremely heavy.

Here is a view of a similar table on the SS ROTTERDAM. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 1997.

Fans of Holland America should especially love this piece as it evokes those halcyon days of a once Dutch-owned post war "spotless fleet". The table's condition is excellent.
