Photos and copyright Peter Knego 1998. Another pleasant surprise during my visit to Alang in September of 2005, these chairs were available in quantity and at a reasonable price, which I am able to pass on here. Only seven came in my last container, but more await in India.
I would strongly suggest these chairs were transferred from the RMS WINDSOR CASTLE's older fleetmates, SA ORANJE (ex PRETORIA CASTLE) and RMS EDINBURGH CASTLE (see above images) as the chairs shown in the WINDSOR CASTLE brochures have a metal frame. These chairs are identical to those from the two older ships, which were scrapped in 1975 and 1976, respectively. Many thanks to Shawn Dake, proud owner of two of them, for pointing this out.
They are upholstered in leather and have the sturdy craftsmanship typical of British ships of the post war era. They are simple and charming remnants of a much-missed blue water fleet.
A trio lined up "bench" style. Photo and copyright Peter Knego 2006.
