The lovely WINSTON CHURCHILL was built in 1967 for DFDS' Harwich to Ejsberg route. According to Bruce Peter, author of the excellent DANISH SHIP DESIGN 1936 -- 1991 (available through Mainmast Books), she was "a great liner in miniature". Designed by Kay Kørbing and fitted with the finest materials available, including Orrefors crystal and exotic woods, she served her original owners until 1996, when damaged by an engine room fire. At that time, she was sold to a Florida-based shipowner and renamed MAYAN EMPRESS for service in the Gulf of Mexico. After costly mechanical repairs, the owner defaulted on payments and the ship was seized by creditors. She never sailed on a commercial voyage as MAYAN EMPRESS, and after several idle years in Norway, was finally sold to Alang shipbreakers in late 2003. She was delivered in early 2004.

These acrylic signs were posted in various public spaces and passageways around the ship. They still say WINSTON CHURCHILL as the ship was never officially refitted for service as MAYAN EMPRESS. The signage is in English and Danish.
